Niagara Catholic student senators elect 2017/18 student trustees

Niagara Catholic Student Senators have elected Hannah Tummillo and Nico Tripodi as the Board’s Student Trustees and Co-Chairs of Secondary Student Senate for 2017-2018. Hannah is a student at Lakeshore Catholic High School, and Nico is a student at Saint Francis Catholic Secondary School.

They were elected during the 2017 Niagara Catholic Student Leadership Symposium at Club Roma May 11.

The Student Senate aligns with Niagara Catholic’s System Priority of enhancing student engagement and student voice, and implements the annual requirements within the Elementary Student Senate and Secondary Student Senate Board Policies.

Hannah replaces graduating student Kira Petriello, whose term as Secondary Student Senate CoChair and Student Trustee concludes at the end of June.

“We extend tremendous appreciation to Kira and Nico for their exemplary leadership, passion and active participation as Student Senate Co-Chairs and Student Trustees throughout this school year,” said Niagara Catholic Director of Education, John Crocco. “We know that Kira is very excited to begin her new journey as she attends university, and we are fortunate to have Nico return to his position as Student Senate Co-Chair and Student Trustee, as we know he will be generous in sharing his time, talent and experience with Hannah as she steps into her new role. I have every confidence that Hannah and Nico will make a strong team, and will continue to bring energy and enthusiasm to the Board as representatives of Niagara Catholic’s 22,000 students. The 2017 Student Leadership Symposium was an inspiring and rewarding day for all elementary and secondary students as Niagara Catholic continues to engage and enhance student voice and leadership.”

Board Chair Father Paul MacNeil congratulated Hannah and Nico on their election, and offered Kira best wishes as she moves on to post-secondary education.

“Being a Student Trustee is a tremendous responsibility for a student,” said MacNeil. “They bring the voice of nearly 22,000 students to the larger Board, and Kira and Nico have been remarkable in the way that they have represented themselves and all students this school year. I believe I can speak on behalf of all trustees when I say that we will miss their energy and enthusiasm, their very thoughtful contributions to discussions and, most of all, their friendship. We hope they have learned a great deal from their experience, and I can confidently say that we have learned from them as well. I wish Kira every success as she graduates from Niagara Catholic in June and begins her new journey this fall, and send her my prayers for a very successful future. I am delighted Nico will join us at the table again in 2017-2018 and look forward to meeting Hannah and working with her in the coming year.”

Niagara Catholic is also pleased to announce that Isabella D’Addio, a student at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Elementary School, and Olive-Iya Stary, a student at St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Elementary School, have been elected Co-Chairs of the Elementary Student Senate. They replace outgoing Co-Chairs Luca DiPietro and Maceo Tripodi.

The 17th Annual Student Leadership Symposium, was co-ordinated under the leadership of this year’s Secondary Student Senate, administrative liaisons Anthony Cardamone, Ralph DeFazio, Ken Griepsma and Steve Ward, and Niagara Catholic’s Arts and Student Leadership Consultant Teri Cristelli. In addition to the election, the more than 350 students who attended were inspired by an incredibly moving, powerful and faith-filled speech by keynote speaker Orlando Bowen.
