Off-duty police officer killed in crash

An off-duty Niagara Regional Police officer was killed early Friday after a crash on Hwy. 406 in Welland.
Police Chief Jeff McGuire made the announcement of Const. Joe Mellen Jr.’s death and said the officer was a nine-year veteran, having worked out of Niagara Falls.
Mellen Jr. was a Welland resident and is survived by his parents, a sister and two young children, seven and five years old. 
“This is truly a tragedy that someone so young, with so much to give is gone. Policing is a family and Joe’s loss will be felt by every member of the service. We extend our deepest sympathy to Joe’s many friends and family and will be supporting them in their time of grief,” said McGuire.
The crash left the driver of a car involved in the incident in critical condition.
The Ontario Provincial Police traffic support unit, which happened just south of Woodlawn Rd., because Hwy. 406 is a provincial highway.
