Paddlers race to help emergency shelter

The competition was fierce Saturday in the heats at the 16th Annual Welland Dragon Boat Festival at the WIFC.

It was a great day on the water Saturday June 9/2018 as 26 crews competed while benefiting the Welland Heritage Council and Multicultural Centre’s emergency shelter.

Crew’s made up of 20 paddlers competed throughout the day at the Welland International Flatwater Centre in the 16th annual presentation of the event.

“It’s a really beautiful day for this event, the weather is perfect” Lori Webster, of the Welland Heritage Council and Multicultural Centre said.

“In total, we have 26 crews registered for the event,” she said. “We have local crews, a couple crews from the GTA and we have crew from Buffalo participating in the event.”

“All funds raised go towards our emergency shelter,” she said. “It’s for people who have newly arrived to Canada and don’t yet have the means to support themselves. This is the only way we receive funding for this shelter.”

Race results will be posted later on the Welland Dragon Boat Festival website: http://wellanddragonboatfestival.com/.
