Panthers battle to OT wins over Blackhawks and Regals

The Pelham Panthers have added two more wins to their record for this season with a 3 – 2 OT win in Thorold Thursday Feb. 15/2018 and a 5 – 4 OT win against the Buffalo Regals in Pelham Sunday Feb. 18/2018.

In Thursday’s win in Thorold against the Blackhawks Pelham ended the first period leading 2 – 1. Dante Massi scored Thorold’s goal early in the period. About halfway through, Peter Izzo evened the score for Pelham. Izzo connected again late in the first to give them the 2 -1 lead.

A second period goal from Matt Maidens of Thorold tied the score at 2 each running into a scoreless third period to force the overtime.

Thomas Young connected at 1:23 in the overtime period to give Pelham the win.

Sunday’s 5 – 4 OT win against the Regals was a battle. Buffalo was leading 3 – 1 at the end of the first period. Buffalo goals came from AJ Marinelli, Nash Braun and Tyler Kallay. Matt Ruigrok netted Pelham’s first period goal.

A three goal period for the Panthers put them ahead 4 – 3 at the end of the second. Matt Ruigrok netted two for Pelham giving him a hat trick for the game, Petter Izzo netted the other Pelham goal.

Michael Sokol’s in the first quarter of the third period tied the game for Buffalo, the rest of the period scoreless, forcing the overtime.

Adam Scholz connected for Pelham’s winning goal at 4:43 in the OT period.

Pelham currently holds the sixth place position in the Golden Horseshoe Division, the Thorold Blackhawks hold the fifth place position, the Buffalo Regals are in ninth. For up to date standings see the GOJHL website: .

Pelham’s next action is Family Day Monday Feb. 19/2018 at 6 p.m. against the Welland Junior Canadians at the Pelham Arena.
