Panthers win both weekend encounters against Junior Canadians

Pelham’s Curtis Emery and Martin Nowysz of Welland tangle in GOJHL hockey action Sunday night in Welland.

The Pelham Panthers outdid the Welland Junior Canadians at the scoreboard to win both encounters this weekend in GOJHL hockey action.

Pelham won 4 – 2 on home ice Friday, Jan. 11/2019 and 10 – 2 on Welland ice Sunday Jan. 13/2019.

In Sunday night’s action, both teams netted a goal in the first period, ending in a 1 – 1 tie. Brendan Charlton connected for the Panthers, Matthew Maidens connected for the Junior Canadians.

The second period was a runaway period as the Panthers netted six unanswered goals. Panther goals came from: Wyatt Thole for two, Devin Sanders, Matt Ruigrok, Thomas Young, Noah Caperchione and Jackson Barrett.

Whatt Thole added his hat trick in the third period, Thomas Young netted his second of the night for the Panthers, Dyrden Rivet netted the Junior Canadians second goal.

There was no first period scoring in the Friday night encounter. Pelham’s Zach Thompson and Owen Allan each netted a goal putting the Panthers ahead 2 – 0 in the second.

Welland’s Martin Nowysz netted their lone goal in the third period.

Matt Rugrok netted Pelham’s third goal and Zach Thompson netted the fourth, his second of the night.

The Palham Panthers are ahead four games to one in the season matchup between the two teams. Pelham won 6 – 1 in the Sept. 21 meeting, Welland won 4 – 3 in the Oct. 28 game. Pelham won 7 – 3 in the Dec. 21 game.

The Panthers are off for the week until they face the Lockport Regals on Sunday, Jan. 20/2019, at the Meridian Community Centre.

Welland will be meeting the Thorold Blackhawks twice this week, Thursday, Jan. 17/2019, in Thorold at 7 p.m., then Sunday, Jan. 20/2019, in Welland at 7 p.m.
