Niagara Regional Police used a training session for its underwater search and recovery and marine units Thursday to search for a Welland woman missing since early December.
Divers were in the ice-filled Welland Canal at the south end of West St. in Port Colborne searching for 56-year-old Cathy Pietz.
An area around the scene, near the City of Port Colborne’s works yard, was taped off, with three police vehicles inside.
Acting Staff Sgt. Wayne Genders said police were checking the canal based on information provided by the family.
“We’re looking at all avenues … things we couldn’t do a while back,” said Genders. “We want to conclude this for the family.”
Divers were in the water from sometime after 9:30 a.m. until just after 1 p.m. and Genders said they’ll be back on Friday.
Pietz was last seen in her family home in Welland at 10:30 p.m. on Dec. 6. She is described as 5’5″, 240 lbs., with long, straight blonde hair and blue eyes. Police said she has a three-inch vertical scar below the outside corner of her right eye.
Pietz was last seen wearing black slacks with a white stripe and a blue sweater.
Police believe she was driving a red four-door 2001 Pontiac GT1 with Ontario licence plate AWYV176.
Police ask anyone with information about Pietz’s disappearance to call 905-735-7811 ext. 3306.
