Port Colborne adds Touch-A-Truck to Fire Prevention Week open house

City of Port Colborne press release – Port Colborne’s annual Fire Prevention Week open house is bigger and better this year with the addition of Touch-a-Truck next door at the Engineering and Operations Centre. On Saturday, Oct. 5/2019, from 11 a.m. – 2 p.m., children, families and community members are welcomed to the Port Colborne Fire Hall and Engineering and Operations Centre to learn more about fire prevention and city operations.

The Port Colborne Engineering and Operations Centre, located at 1 Killaly Street West, will play host to the City’s first Touch-a-Truck event, allowing kids of all ages to touch, learn, and sit in trucks, tractors, snowplows, and other pieces of equipment used by City staff.

“Touch-a-Truck will add a new and exciting aspect to our Fire Prevention Week open house,” said Amber LaPointe, member of Port Colborne’s Leadership Program. “City staff are excited to show and teach the community about the equipment they use on a daily basis to serve the residents of Port Colborne.”

Touch-a-Truck is spearheaded by Port Colborne’s Leadership Program, an in-house program designed to train and prepare the corporation’s up and coming leaders. Funds raised from this event, including a donation-based barbeque lunch, will benefit Niagara Nutrition Partners, a Region-wide initiative providing coordinated nutrition programs in elementary and secondary schools.

Port Colborne Fire & Emergency Services will be hosting their Fire Prevention Week open house at 3 Killaly Street West, offering activates including fire escape routes, fire truck tours, target practice with fire hose and a live burn cell demonstration to ensure everyone is fire safe.

“Fire prevention is critical for all members of the family to know and practice,” said Charles Turpin, fire prevention officer. “The theme for this year’s Fire Prevention Week is escape planning. We want to encourage families to be the heroes in their homes by having a planned escape route in case of a fire. Remember, never think a fire can’t happen to you.”
