Public Open House for 2017 municipal drain maintenance program

On March 30th, from 7:00pm until 9:00pm the Township of Wainfleet will be holding a Public Open House at the Wainfleet Community Centre to present and discuss the 2017 maintenance program.

The Township Wainfleet has over 250 kilometres of Municipal Drains which provide invaluable drainage, flood control, and other services to its rural landowners.

Under the Drainage Act, R.S.O. 1990, the Township is responsible for the maintenance and repair of these drains. In order to maintain this network of drains the Township has an active maintenance program, with the goal of inspecting and maintaining all its drains in a timely and reasonable manner.

Each year, based on these inspections, field investigations and landowner information, the Township maintains approximately 30 kilometers of Municipal Drains. This generally includes brushing one or both banks and a cleanout of collected debris and sediment from the bottom of the drain to ensure it remains effective.

“This is a great opportunity for residents of properties which will be affected by the 2017 maintenance program to meet with Township staff and receive more details on the program as well as up-to-date information on the Best Management Practices related to municipal drains,” said Drainage Superintendent Jason Culp. “I would encourage all landowners who have drains on their property to drop in and meet with us.”

Township residents wanting more information or clarification should contact the Municipal Office at (905) 899-3463.
