United Way Niagara press release – The Niagara Poverty Reduction Network (NPRN), United Way Niagara and the Niagara Artists Centre are excited to co-present a free screening of ‘PUSH – The Film’ in partnership with The Film House at the FirstOntario Performing Arts Centre. PUSH – The Film will be featured at The Film House on Wednesday, Mar. 18/2020, at 7 p.m. A thirty-minute moderated panel discussion will take place following the film to bring attention to, and discuss, the current housing landscape in Niagara.

PUSH is an internationally recognized documentary that follows Canada Without Poverty executive director, Leilani Farha, in her role as United Nations Special Rapporteur on Adequate Housing as she investigates the global housing market and asks, “How can we build cities that we can all afford to live in?” Follow Farha’s journey around the world to look at the effects hyper-commodified housing is having on communities and neighbourhoods.

“As anti-poverty activists, we need to be advancing the conversation on social justice in every way that we can. Art is one of the greatest tools at our disposal— for telling stories about justice and injustice, and for imagining a powerful way forward. The NPRN movie project is thus a wonderful next step”, shared Aidan Johnson, Chair of the Niagara Poverty Reduction Network.

“Bringing this film to Niagara provides a unique opportunity to hear about key learnings and the possibilities for real change to Niagara’s housing landscape. Having an individual’s lived experience perspective as part of the panel discussion afterwards will allow United Way to hear firsthand the ways in which we can invest in concrete housing security solutions”, states Frances Hallworth, executive director of United Way Niagara.

Everyone in the community is welcome to attend the free screening. It is advised to order your free ticket in advance by calling the box office: 905-688-0722, going on the website at firstontariopac.ca, or visit the box office in-person at 250 St. Paul Street, St Catharines.
