Rock Around the Clock 24-hour radiothon supports students and community

Niagara College press release – A group of Niagara College Broadcasting – Radio, Television and Film students are ready to pull an all-nighter to help others through this year’s Rock Around the Clock 24-hour radiothon.

The live broadcast on College radio station CRNC The Heat will begin on Thursday, November 29/2018, at noon and will continue until Friday, November 30/2018, at noon. Stationed  at the Welland Campus (in the Simcoe foyer, near International), students will be collecting cash donations for the NC Student Administrative Council’s Nourishing Minds program,  which provides grocery gift cards to students in need, as well as food donations for a food bank in Welland.

“Rock Around The Clock is an opportunity for BRTF students to fund raise for the Nourishing Minds program in a way that radio stations raise money and awareness in the real world,” said Bruce Gilbert, BRTF coordinator and presentation professor. “The 24-hour commitment has become a real bonding opportunity for incoming and outgoing department heads too.”

“It will definitely be rewarding helping out the community – especially helping the community doing something that we all love: radio,” said Sara Meshmesh, third-year BRTF student who is CRNC’s program director and is responsible for organizing and coordinating the show hours for the event.

Meshmesh noted that they will be asking students to donate their loonies and toonies during Rock Around the Clock this year. “We know a lot of students can’t afford a big donation,” she said. “We don’t want to set a specific goal – we just want to help as many students as we can.”

Students will be filling the 24-hour broadcast with various specialty shows, including sports and a Disney hour, as well as with various genres of music.

CRNC The Heat is the campus radio station for Niagara College. Located inside Niagara College’s Welland Campus, The Heat is on-air 24/7. Listen for music, news and information, all presented by Broadcasting – Radio, Television and Film students.
