A bike rodeo and interactive fire display will be part of the 21st annual Safety Awareness Day and Bike Rodeo Saturday, May 23 at Port Colborne fire hall.

The event is being put on by the Community Safety Committee and Port Colborne Fire and Emergency Services, said safety committee member, and Ward 2 Coun., Angie Desmarais.

“It’s aimed at elementary school children and runs from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. We include as many safety aspects as we can … things children might encounter in the community,” said Desmarais.

The event had previously been run by community policing, but when that was disbanded by Niagara Regional Police the community safety committee formed and took on running safety day.

Desmarais said the Mayor’s Youth Advisory Council will do face painting and skateboard and bike safety, while the Optimist Club will run the bike rodeo, where children are required to wear a helmet while taking part.

“There are a couple of bicycles to win,” she said.

Enbridge will be on hand running a barbecue with free hot dogs.

Regional police, Niagara OPP and Niagara EMS paramedics will be at the event, and will have various pieces of emergency equipment on hand. Port Colborne firefighters will have various displays and demonstrations set up.

“It depends on what they have available,” said Desmarais. “It’s a good day and there’s a lot of outreach to children in the community.”

She said there will be a bucket set up for donations for Hayden Davis, who has Stage 4 Neuroblastoma Cancer. She is the daughter of a Port Colborne volunteer firefighter.
