Severe thunderstorm warning issued for South Niagara

Environment Canada has issued a severe thunderstorm warning for South Niagara for the evening on Friday, July 5/2019.

“At 6:50 p.m. EDT, Environment Canada meteorologists are tracking a severe thunderstorm capable of producing heavy rain,” the warning said. “Rainfall amounts of 50 mm an hour or more are associated.”

The warning also says “Heavy downpours can cause flash floods and water pooling on roads.”

The warning also reminds people of the danger of severe thunderstorms.

“Lightning kills and injures Canadians every year. Remember, when thunder roars, go indoors,” the warning says. “The Office of the Fire Marshal and Emergency Management recommends that you take cover immediately if threatening weather approaches.”

“Severe thunderstorm warnings are issued when imminent or occurring thunderstorms are likely to produce or are producing one or more of the following: large hail, damaging winds, torrential rainfall.”
