St. Catharines man arrested after interacting children

Niagara Regional Police Service press release – 1 District St. Catharines uniform officers from the Niagara Regional Police Service have arrested a St. Catharines man following an incident outside a local community centre.

On May 14/2019, at approximately 6:30 p.m. officers were called to the area of Russell Avenue and George Street for a report of a suspicious person.

When officers arrived on-scene they received information from members of the public that a unknown man had approached a 10-year-old boy outside of a community centre on Russell Avenue and began speaking to him. The mother of the child while carrying her other 6-year-old son intervened. During the confrontation the man made physical contact with the 6-year-old.

The same man then approached a group of children playing in the nearby school yard of Harriet Tubman Public School and began interacting with them. The man is believed to have also briefly entered the school that was being used by a third party for an after school hours event.

Officers subsequently located the man near Harriet Tubman Public School where he was arrested.

Tyler Kevin Chambers (30-years-old) of St. Catharines is charged with the alleged offences of:
– Invitation to Sexual Touching
– Assault
– Breach of Probation (2 Counts)

Chambers attended a bail hearing at the Robert S. K. Welch Courthouse in St. Catharines on May 15/2019, where he was subsequently held in custody.

This matter remains under investigation by Detectives from the Child Abuse Unit. Detectives believe there are more victims, particularly from the interactions that occurred on or near the grounds of Harriet Tubman Public School. Anyone with information is asked to contact detectives at 905-688-4111, extension 5100.
