TD Bank Group, through its charitable foundation, donated $10,000 to Habitat for Humanity Niagara toward the construction of a new house this September on Crescent Road in Fort Erie.
Gerry Brisson, TD’s Manager of the Garrison Road branch, got involved with Habitat through sponsoring an Adopt a Build Day for TD staff in October of this year to help build a deck on the house. Adopt a Days are when a team of people work on the build site for the day doing tasks to build the house. The funds raised from Adopt-a-Days go toward the purchase of construction materials needed to build the house – it is a unique combination of volunteer hours and financial contributions that double the team’s impact. Included in an Adopt-a-Day is lunch for all of the volunteers, and this year all lunches will be generously donated by the local McDonald’s, owned by Peter Patterson.
“This is a substantial donation toward our fundraising goal and we are most thankful to TD Bank Group and Gerry for their support,” said Alastair Davis, Habitat Niagara’s CEO. “Now we are just $20,000 shy of our goal, and that’s an incredible feeling.”
With many local businesses and community groups having already confirmed their date to help build the house through the Adopt-a-Day program, there are only 10 spots left that remain to be filled. “It is going to be such a memorable team-building experience for us to build a house for a family who deserves to have a decent life,” said Gerry.
Local residents Carlos, Rocio and their five children who emigrated from El Salvador to flee gang violence, moved to Canada in 2011. They will be the future homeowners of the house on Crescent Road. Both Carlos and Rocio are very active in the Fort Erie community, helping other Latin families settle in Canada, and they were thrilled to have been approved to purchase a Habitat house.
Habitat for Humanity offers homeownership opportunities to families who are unable to obtain a traditional mortgage and are living in poor conditions. Additionally, families contribute 500 hours of “sweat equity” on the construction of their home or someone else’s home, and because Habitat houses are built using donations of cash, land, material and labour, mortgage payments are kept affordable.
