Third sortie ends with Junior Canadians win over Meteors

The first period had a few scuffles, this one in front of Welland netminder Alex Vendette. Fort Erie’s Luca Mazzo and Cail Cirillo tangled with Welland Alex Page, Nicholas Bisser and Joey Frantonio.

The Welland Junior Canadians and the Fort Erie Meteors third sortie for this season ended in a 4 – 3 win for the Junior Canadians in overtime Saturday Dec. 15/2018 in GOJHL hockey action in Fort Erie.

The Junior Canadians have won all three of the meetings between the teams this season. They won 4 – 3 at their meeting on Sept. 16 and 5 – 2 at their meeting on Nov. 4.

The first period saw a few scuffles that sent several players from both teams to the penalty box. Twenty minutes in regular penalties were given to both teams, Welland earned ten, Fort Erie earned ten. Two ten minute misconducts went to Fort Erie and one to Welland.

At the scoreboard, the period ended 2 – 1 for Fort Erie, Welland was first on the scoreboard.

Welland’s Jarrett Olbruck netted a short-handed goal at 1:25 with an assist from Kellan Rosebaum.

Brady Lee put the Meteors on the scoreboard at 4:14 assisted by Evan Miller and Marco Lariccia. Evan Miller netted their second goal at 13:15 with assists from Kyle Sullivan and Brady Lee.

The battle continued in the second period, Brannon Butler from Fort Erie was given a game misconduct for a head contact major penalty. Fort Erie had 17 minutes in penalties for the period, Welland had ten minutes as well as a game misconduct to Phillippe Angervil for abuse of officials after receiving an unsportsmanlike conduct minor.

Welland scored the only goal of the period to bring it to a 2 – 2 tie. Matthew Maidens connected on a power play at 16:22 assisted by Matt Baumann and Kelland Rosenbaum.

The penalties subsided in the third period, each team only receiving one minor penalty each.

Both teams added one more goal in the third period ending in a 3 – 3 tie to be decided in overtime. Jacob Thomason scored Welland’s goal at 2:26 assisted by Aaron Chiarot and Quinn Chevers. Luca Mazzo scored Fort Erie’s goal at 7:53 assisted by Marco Lariccia and Drew Passero.

The game winner for the Junior Canadians came at 3:47 in the OT period from Matthew Maidens assisted by Kellan Rosebaum and Brenden Morin.

This is the fourth loss in a row for the Fort Erie Meteors, they lost 4 – 2 to the Niagara Falls Canucks on Friday night in Niagara Falls. The Meteors will be facing the Canucks again Saturday Dec. 22/2018 at 7:15 p.m. at the Leisureplex.

For Welland the game was a bounce back after a disheartening 10 – 0 loss Thursday Dec. 13/2018 in Hamilton against the Kilty Bs.

They are next in action Sunday Dec. 16/2018 at 7 p.m. against the St. Catharines Falcons in Welland.
