Wainfleet Council continued to build their fire department yesterday by filling out the command structure with the creation of a Deputy Chief position.

At its regular meeting of Council on Tuesday, June 12/2018, Council passed a bylaw appointing Wainfleet local, and former Platoon Chief, Shawn Schutten, as Deputy Fire Chief. After 10 years of dedicated service and leadership on the volunteer department, Schutten has worked his way up through the ranks and becomes the first person to hold the role.

“I’m very honoured to serve in this new capacity and look forward to making major strides that will move Wainfleet Fire forward in terms of not only suppression capability, but also public education and prevention as well,” said Deputy Fire Chief Schutten. “We have a relatively young but growing department and this is a very exciting time for us.”

“Deputy Fire Chief Schutten will provide crucial leadership and continuity in the department,” said Wainfleet CAO, William Kolasa. “Our firefighters have been working very hard to build momentum and striving toward important goals as firefighters and as a department.”

The Wainfleet Fire Department operates four fire stations to provide the Township with fire protection and emergency services. The volunteer department has a complement of approximately 30 firefighters and will be recruiting new volunteers in the Fall of 2018. The Township is also currently recruiting a full-time Fire Chief.
