The City of Welland is pleased to announce the appointment of Deputy Fire Chief Brian Kennedy as Welland’s new Chief of Fire and Emergency Services. City Council approved this appointment at their Council meeting on Tuesday, August 23, 2016. Deputy Kennedy will assume his duties on September 3, 2016.

Deputy Kennedy joined Welland’s Fire Service in 1984 and has been Deputy Fire Chief since July 2011.

“Brian has the skills, knowledge, and experience to be Welland’s Fire Chief and to ensure the continued delivery of first rate fire and emergency services in our community,” said Chief Administrative Officer Gary Long. “He is respected by the firefighters, he exudes professionalism and he has demonstrated his leadership abilities by successfully implementing and managing many strategic initiatives in collaboration with Fire Chief Denys Prevost and fire service personnel.”

“This appointment not only shows Council’s confidence in me as a leader, but more importantly it’s confidence in our department as a whole, our staff, our programs, and our vision,” said Deputy Fire Chief Brian Kennedy. “We demand excellence from our employees on a daily basis and they continually respond. The bar has been set very high over the last years and we as a team will continue to raise it. I look forward to the opportunity to continue to be a part of this team in the capacity of Fire Chief.”

Welland’s current Fire Chief Denys Prevost announced his retirement in early August and his last official day is September 2, 2016. Welland’s Fire and Emergency Services are delivered by a composite department of career and volunteer personnel operating out of five fire stations.
