Welland Civic Square becomes emergency overnight shelter

With extreme freezing temperatures continuing Friday into Saturday morning, the City of Welland has created an emergency overnight warming shelter at Civic Square, at 60 East Main St.

“The city’s Emergency Overnight Warming Shelter is a safe warm place for people to find relief from extreme winter conditions,” a City of Welland press release said. “Presently, the shelter is able to accommodate up to 10 people.”

“The emergency shelter is open to the public when Environment Canada issues a cold alert in Niagara of temperatures -15°C and will operate between the hours of 7:00 p.m. to 8:00 a.m,” the release said.

The City is encouraging people in need of overnight shelter to call 211 services first to try and locate appropriate accommodations.

“However, people are welcome to use the shelter on a drop-in basis for overnight stay if the shelter is not at capacity,” the release says. “The public is encouraged to check-in for overnight stay early in the evening due to the shelter’s 10-person capacity limit.”
