Welland house fire investigation leads to an arson arrest

Niagara Regional Police Service press release – On May 15/2020, at approximately 9:20 a.m. emergency services personnel responded to a report of a house fire on Afton Avenue near Lincoln Street East in Welland.

On arrival, a home was found to be engulfed in flames.  Welland Fire Services commenced battling the fire.

3 District – Welland uniform officers and detectives commenced an investigation into the cause of the fire.  Officers determined that there had been an argument in the home between a resident and a person known to them.  Officers formed grounds to believe that the person who had been visiting the residence was responsible for the fire.

Officers have arrested and charged Kyle Colin Cormier (30 years old) of Welland with the alleged Criminal Code of Canada offence of:

  • Arson disregard human life, Section 433(a)

Cormier is being held in custody for a bail hearing.  He will appear on May 16, 2020, via video link to the Robert S. K. Welch Courthouse in St. Catharines.

The matter remains under investigation by detectives and officials from the Ontario Fire Marshall’s Office.

Damage estimates have not been completed, however, it is believed to be extensive.

There were no injuries as a result of the fire.
