Welland man injured rescuing pets from fire

A Welland man has been injured after returning to rescue his cats after he initially evacuated his residence due to fire Saturday Apr. 13/2019.

A basement fire had broken out in the basement of the East Main St. building which spread to the main level and the upper level before the Welland Fire and Emergency Services Department were notified.

“The young man was injured by smoke and fire after he entered the building to rescue his cats,” Welland Fire and Emergency Services Deputy Chief Adam Eckhart said. “When you detect fire, get out and stay out.”

He said smoke alarms notified the occupant of the fire.

Damage to the building is estimated to exceed $500,00, the fire was limited to the one building and did not spread adjoining buildings. The investigation is ongoing into the cause of the fire is ongoing.

The male occupant, the owner of the building, was treated for his injuries and released from hospital
