Welland Skateboard and BMX Park holds grand opening

After more than a decade of planning and fundraising, the Welland Skateboard and BMX Park held its grand opening Saturday.

After years of effort the Welland Skateboard and BMX Park celebrated its official grand opening Saturday, June 9/2018.

For the past ten years, even more, members of the Welland Mayor’s Youth Advisory Council (MYAC) and the City of Welland have been fundraising and planning for this park to become a reality. Grants from the Government of Canada also aided in this park becoming a reality.

All the effort was remembered Saturday at the celebration.

“My involvement in this process bring to justice the amount of work that other MYAC chairs,” MYAC Chair Vani Sharma said Saturday. She has been part of the committee’s efforts for this park for four years.

“This has been in the making for the past decade,” she said. “There has been hard work, planning and fundraising for over ten years.”

“It’s been a great honour to have been part of the journey for four of those years,” she said. “It’s wonderful to see that dream come true, we have a wonderful place for the youth to come and enjoy.”

Welland Mayor Frank Campion was one of the speakers at Saturday’s grand opening.

“I would like to think Welland MP Vance Badaway for helping us get a grant that helped make this happen,” Campion said.

“I really want to thank MYAC for keeping this project alive,” he said. “It was their patience, diligence and hard work that made this happen.”

The grand opening included many vendors setting up displays, live entertainment and displays.

The Welland Skateboard and BMX Park is located south of Lincoln St. on the West Side of the Canal. Information about the rules and usage of the park is available on the City of Welland website: https://www.welland.ca/parks/skatepark.asp .
