Whalers’ season comes to an end

Zach Main of the Whalers gets around Stephen Alvo of the St. George Ravens in GMHL playoff hockey action Sunday night in Port Colborne.

The Niagara Whalers season has come to an end Sunday Mar. 18/2018 after losing game six 8 – 4 to the St. George Ravens.

The game began with the Whalers trailing behind in the GMHL South Division Championship series, it was three games to two for the Ravens when the puck dropped at the Vale Health and Wellness Centre in Port Colborne.

The Whalers were first on the scoreboard in the first period which ended in a 1 – 1 tie. The Niagara goal came from Erik Peavey, the St. George’s goal came from Chris Haigh.

It was 5 – 4 at the end of the second for the Ravens. Lucas Pozzobon and Alessio Piroso netted two each for the Ravens. Brandon Lindberg netted two for the Whalers, Zach Main netted a single.

The Ravens put in three more goals in the third period. Stephen Alvo and Adam Kawalec netted two of the three, Lucas Pozzobon netted the last one for his hat trick of the night.

The Niagara Whalers ended the regular season in third place, twelve points behind the first place Ravens in the GMHL South Division. The season total was 32 wins for the Whalers, nine losses and one overtime loss for a win percentage of 0.774.

As South Division Champions, the St. George Ravens will be facing the the North Division Champions Almaquin Spartans for the Russell Cup.
